GOOD NEWS!

There’s a free publication on this campus known as Jabberwocky. Last semester I submitted a poem called “The Last Orchard” and heard nothing from them. This semester I submitted another piece, a short story this time, and again waited.

Now spring is here, and they’re getting ready to print.

And I got an email. They’re going to print “The Last Orchard”! The unveiling of this year’s Jabberwocky is Tuesday, May 8th at 6pm in Bartlett Hall, and I’ll be there.

Also: Everyone check out my Guest Comic at ibroketheinter.net. For as long as it continues to amuse me, I shall continue gracing IBTI with guest comics occasionally (that is, whenever he feels like posting whatever scribbles I make). This first one is me playing with Inkscape! I can’t guarantee that my future comics will be as high-quality.

Theoretically yours,
-Adrian

An Open Letter to ATI+AMD

Dear ATI (and therefore AMD),

I wanted to inform you that while your graphics cards are supposedly “top of the line”, competing on the highest level with only NVidia, your inability to provide proper drivers is an infuriating black spot on your company name.

Your competitor, NVidia, has developed a line of graphics cards, the GeForce line, for which interfaces have been entirely standardized; a single device driver runs every card in the line. You seem to be attempting something similar with the Radeon line, but it looks to me as though there is little or no coordination on this, it’s as if 5 cards actually respond to one driver, and everything else needs their own.

Apple ships many of their computers with ATI cards. I would argue that on this move Apple is currently more than a bit brain-dead. ATI’s hardware drivers for OSX are not as good as the windows drivers. I want to point out that even in Windows, your drivers are often faulty, require tons of problematic software to administer… And this doesn’t even start in on the bane of the corporate linux world, that hell-in-driver-form, FGLRX.

In short, learn to program. Learn to do cross-platform compatibility, and for God’s sake, agree on some standards! Until that time, I am an NVidia customer.

Theoretically yours,
-Adrian Sud

Ow.

Sometimes when dreams are bad enough, the response from the dreamer can be so cliche that some force of nature must bend it back toward reality. This morning, I had a nightmare. I had a nightmare so bad that I awoke sitting bolt straight in my bed.

At least, I would have, except that since my bed is lofted rather high, this position would have placed the top of my scalp two inches into the concrete ceiling.

Instead I awoke shaking, clutching my brain-case, and pondering how much more it would hurt if I fell from the bed to the floor below. It was actually quite a scene; my roommate was watching me, probably trying to decide whether he had enough time to make popcorn.

My skull is no longer tender, but I still have a headache.
